Smokin' Stuff Competition BBQ Team - it's a family affair: our team members consist of my oldest daughter Alicia and her husband Tony, my wife Tina, myself, Fred and my youngest daughter Jessica.
If you mentioned BBQ in south central PA during the 70’s, the first thing that would most likely come to mind would be people standing alongside the road, waving foil lined bags overhead filled with chicken, potatoes and rolls as hungry drivers pulled to the side to whet their appetite while the smoke and aroma of 100s of golden brown chickens cooking over a long charcoal pit would fill the air. If you would have asked for smoked pulled pork, ribs or brisket, you probably would have been met with a blank stare.
In 1985, my high school sweetheart and I were married and we honeymooned in the south where we were introduced to a savory dish we had never had before; pulled pork and spare ribs smoked over an open hickory pit… we fell in love… with the pork & ribs! When we arrived at home, I said to myself, "self, you must learn the art of making this delicious food!" And so, the adventure began in discovering how to make the perfect “Q”.
Several decades later, as well as, several smokers later, our family found ourselves in the world of competition BBQ where we continue to perfect our “Q”.
Truth be known… on a Sunday morning in church. Yep, that’s right! Many years ago, I decided to welcome all the church guys to my house to have a “Boys Night” out. So, on a Sunday morning during announcement time I made the invite, and it went something like this…
“I just wanted to invite all the guys over to my house on such and such a night… It’ll be a great night of fellowship we’re gonna be smokin’ stuff and havin’ a good ole time…”
Guys, have you ever gotten the look? You know, that look you got from Momma when you said something stupid and Momma would tilt her head front and peer over the top of her glasses while laser beams shot out of her eyes that would have made Superman jealous? Well, imagine a couple dozen Mommas looking at me… “YOU’RE GONNA SMOKE WHAT???” No, no, no, no, no… we’re gonna smoke ribs & brisket & pork! LORD HAVE MERCY!
Well, when it came time to name our team, we just couldn’t shake it.
